If you’re here, it’s likely because you spied these pretty wall tiles over on my Rosh Hashanah Honey Tasting Tablescape post and wanted to know their story. Well, I’ll tell it to ya!
But first things first, I’ve got to come clean: This really isn’t so much of a DIY as it is an SSB (Somewhat Store-Bought). 😅 I mean, there is a certain element of DIY-ness to it, in that 1) You have to slap it up on the wall yourself, and 2) You very well could use these hexagonal tiles as jumping-off points for greater and more elaborate DIY adventures. I kept looking at them and thinking, “If only I’d stuck a few pins up there and written out a message, bulletin-board style.” Like, “SHANA TOVA,” where each letter was suspended on an individual cork tile. How fun would that be? I also imagine it’d be cute if you painted them different colors. Or added in some photos of your guests. Or—if you have an extra-large Rosh Hashanah gathering in mind—or you’re getting MARRIED—?!—you could use them as the backdrop for your seating chart.
The point is, there’s really no end to the possibilities here, and I personally think that qualifies this SSB as a DIY all the way.
In any event, you can grab the individual tiles over here! They come with adhesive backings, but I did not use them and neither should you. I repeat: DON’T use the adhesive backings that come with these guys. Instead, grab some Command Tape, as I did. If you’re careful, you shouldn’t have trouble getting it on and (more importantly!) off the wall, but you’ll have to make that call yourself. I simply eyeballed a honeycomb design, crossed my fingers, and got to work—no levels or rulers needed. It’s pretty easy to line everything up using the edges of each tile as a guide. And anyway, it’s temporary, so it’s alright if the eventual design isn’t perfect.
Here’s how mine looked in the end:
If you’d prefer to use a sheet of cork board from a local crafting store, you can do that as well: Lay a printed template over the cork board, then trace with a permanent marker and use an X-Acto knife to cut out the hexagons. Easy! (You’ll need an adhesive backing as well.)
I hope this adds a little bit of extra beauty to your Rosh Hashanah dinners and honey tastings and honey-themed birthday parties and beyond. As always, if you end up using this idea, let me know over on Instagram! I’d love to see what you come up with.
Just noticed the honey bear hiding in there. SO CUTE!! Amazing detail. 🙂
