Melt chocolate, draw stars, stick ’em on cupcakes—done! These little toppers are about as low-lift as it gets. No piping tips or molds needed, and they make even basic store-bought baked goods look beautiful and holiday-ready. Also, I happen to think piping melted chocolate is one of those surprisingly useful skills every host should have in their back pocket; it’s simple, but makes everything look custom (including edible place cards!). So this is a nice project to practice on. P.S. Make more than you think you’ll need, because some will break.

Star of David Cupcake Toppers
Easy star-shaped cupcake toppers that instantly dress up desserts for Hanukkah, Shabbat, and beyond.
- Total Time: 40 minutes
- Yield: About 30 toppers, depending on size
Ingredients
- ½ cup semisweet chocolate chips (or chopped bar chocolate)
- Parchment paper
- Piping bag or Ziploc bag
Instructions
- Line a small baking sheet with parchment paper. Place piping bag or Ziploc inside a tall glass and fold the edges over the rim to keep it open.
- In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the chocolate in 30-second intervals, stirring between each round, until smooth and fully melted. Be careful not to overheat; it’ll seize or burn and turn grainy.
- Spoon the melted chocolate into your bag, snip a tiny hole in the tip, and pipe as many star-shaped designs as you can directly onto the parchment. Don’t worry if they’re not all perfect!
- Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, until fully hardened. Once set, gently peel the stars off the parchment and press them vertically into frosted cupcakes or cakes. Serve!
