i shared these gorgeous cookies last night on instagram at the start of tu b’shvat, and got sooooo many questions about them! so i thought i’d bring the conversation over to the blog.
these are indeed the LOVELIEST cookies around, and i couldn’t help but share them in anticipation of the holiday. for the uninitiated, tu b’shvat is sort of like a jewish arbor day or earth day, and in its modern manifestation it’s intended to help us focus on the environment / trees / sustainability. so…flower cookies felt like a perfect choice! they’re not trees. i know. but they’re close enough to the whole nature theme. i’m SOLD.
yes, they’re made with real flowers, and yes, they’re very much edible. amazing, no?
these particular ones are by loria stern, whose creations are just…out-of-this-world amazing. i’ll highlight some of them below so you can check out a few more of her flower-filled ideas.
wanna make your own? you can get edible flowers at whole foods (i thiiink also at trader joe’s) and most farmers’ markets. in fact, one of my favorite things to do in the spring / summer months here in new york city is to wander through the union square greenmarket looking for them—there are so many great vendors selling fresh culinary flowers.
and you can find loria’s recipe right over here.
happy new year, trees!! 🌳🌳
