Okay, “apple toast” is a bit of a stretch, seeing as there were no apples involved in the making of this toast. But! If you can ignore the somewhat deceptive title, there’s a lot to love about this Rosh Hashanah breakfast idea: It’s the sweetest, easiest way to kick off the Jewish New Year, it’s relatively healthy compared to all of the sugary Rosh Hashanah desserts out there, and it’s just plain cute. And if you know of any other way to serve your kids just *six* chocolate sprinkles without having them straight-up REVOLT, I applaud you.
Also, Rosh Hashanah breakfast is a very overlooked subcategory, don’t you think? I’m here to change that.
This idea is not quite complicated enough to warrant a full recipe—it’s toast, people!—but I’ve written one out below anyway so that you know what to shop for and how best to shape those little apples. Find the full tutorial below!
(And by the way, if you’re looking for other Rosh Hashanah ideas, I’ve got you covered: I also have posts dedicated to Rosh Hashanah quotes, Rosh Hashanah desserts, Rosh Hashanah cocktails, Rosh Hashanah poems, Rosh Hashanah decorations, and more. Plus the dreamiest Rosh Hashanah challah recipe. Shana tova!)
PrintRicotta-Honey Apple Toast for Rosh Hashanah
Description
An easy Rosh Hashanah breakfast idea that both grown-ups and kids will appreciate. Couldn’t be simpler.
Ingredients
- 4–6 slices bread (any kind), toasted
- 1 cup whole milk ricotta
- 1/3 cup strawberry jam (or fruit jam of your choice)
- Handful chocolate sprinkles
- A few sprigs of fresh mint
- Honey, to drizzle as a garnish
- Flaky salt, to taste
Instructions
- Top each slice of toasted bread with the ricotta.
- Use a demitasse/coffee spoon or other small spoon to create small circles of jam on top of your ricotta “canvas.” These will be the base of your apple shapes! (I went in with a toothpick afterwards to create the slight “dip” at the top of each circle—I felt like that gave them more of an apple-like appearance.)
- Add a single chocolate sprinkle on top of each one to serve as the “stem.”
- Use a paring knife to slice a single sprig of mint into a few miniature leaf shapes, as pictured; add one to each of the apples, branching out from the sprinkle stem at a diagonal.
- Garnish with a drizzle of honey (try to garnish from a distance with a light hand so as not to mess up your apple shapes!). Add a sprinkle of flaky salt if desired.
